Room 3 won a National poetry competition!!!

Room 3 had the opportunity today to Skype a real live astronaut in Florida –having won a national competition run by the New Zealand Space Agency. “Message to the future - school competition

“Beginning with Pacific peoples, many cultures have voyaged to Aotearoa at different times from all around the world. They navigated across the seas using stars as their guide. The voyagers travelled in state of the art craft using the stars in outer space and the environment to guide them. They were scientists, innovators, astronomers and astrologers.Today, New Zealander’s are still looking to the stars and we are creating new opportunities to discover and travel into space.

The message will answer the question:            What could be our future in space?”

We also had Tahwai Moss who works for the NZ Space Agency at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment who joined our class today while we took part in the Skype call with Nicole Stott (the astronaut)
The first prize was
* A certificate for the class
* Tuia mission patches for the students in the class
* A live-cross via skype with NASA astronaut Nicole Stott (retired) artist, and speaker

With expert help from Annabel.... the class had to compose their message in 200 words, and were up against young people across the country from Year 0 – Year 8. Here is Room 3’s poem....
 A Trip to Space
We could zoom to the Moon
Or float out to Mars, The Red Planet,
With dusty storms
Dark red like a light that is not working properly.
We could land on hot Venus
Hot like lava.
We could swoop out to Jupiter
With its swirling red spot storm
Spinning like a bey blade
Or take a rocket to the hot shiny Sun
Throwing out rays of light under Maui’s net
We would go past sprinkled stars
Glowing in the black darkness
Of Space.

Here are the pictures of todays skype call with Nicole Stott and visit from Tahwai Moss. The children got the opportunity to read their poem to Nicole and ask her many questions about her life as an astronaut in the International Space Station.
It was a very exciting morning!! Woop woop!!

And here's a short video of one of the kids questions being asked and answered.......

Thank-you Annabel for your amazing poetic inspiration this year.
You are awesome!

A visit for Constable Danny

Today we were treated to a visit from a policeman and his police car. We learnt about the things that policemen carry with them either on their person or in their car. We got to see the lights flashing up close and heard the sirens...they were very loud. We also got to go inside the police car for a closer look.
