As an end of year treat today... we joined with Room 4 and had a pool party! Wow it was soooo much fun. We brought along some of our favourite pool toys from home and enjoyed an extra long time in the nice cool water. Then once we got out and had got dressed we had a shared lunch together. The end of the school year is now only just around the corner....

Our Whole School Triathlon

On Tuesday this week our whole school took part in a triathlon. In Room 3 we were in a team of 3 people except Edward who did the whole thing on his own!
It was heaps of Fun. Bella even dyed her hair for the day. We had to run, bike or swim. Some of us hadn't even been in our school pool very much before that day but now we want to be in the pool all the time!

We have made our plank...

Last term when we paid a visit to  Pinegrove Kindergarten. We liked playing on the the pirate plank they had created in their playground.  Room 3 visits Pinegrove Kindy   When we returned to school we all wrote letters to Mr P our Principal asking him if we could have a pirate plank like that in our school playground. Have a read of our letters   Unfortunately it has taken us a long time for everything to come together in order to make our plank and we had a school production that took up most of the beginning of this term but Mrs Ross kept saying "Yes it was going to happen" and we just waited very patiently!!  So on Friday this week we were finally able to build it.
This has been a big project for us in Room 3 Thank-you to  David's family who donated and delivered the big tractor tyre and thanks to 'Jacks Tyres' in Richmond who gave us and also delivered the smaller tyres we needed and Mr P came up with the plank and cut it to the right length. Yee Ha!!

A Visit from Kori

Today Hope School had a visit from Kori the penguin from the ASB Aquatic Centre. Kori was making sure we knew how to be safe around the water. Our school pool is getting re-surfaced and painted at the moment but very soon we will be able to go swimming in it. Hopefully it will be warm enough.

Repeating Patterns

In Maths this week we have been learning how to make repeating patterns...
We had some interesting patterns made today:
1. Myles said, "I have made two different patterns the first one is... One green bear then two red bears, one green bear then two red bears..." .... The next one I made is one yellow bear, two blue bears, one yellow bear, two blue bears....and Gavin has made one with one yellow bear, one blue bear, one green bear..."
2. David said, "We have two red, two purple, two red, two purple..."
3. Cam ran out of red frogs to complete his frog pattern.
4. Jonty said, "My pattern is one red dinosaur, one orange dinosaur, two blue dinosaurs, one green dinosaur then it repeats...."
5. Theo said, "I have one spider, one fly, one spider, one fly...."
6. Bella said, I have two pink sticks, one purple stick, two pink sticks and then it will be one purple stick again".
7. Tyler said, "This time I have one red peg, one purple peg, one red peg, one purple peg..."

A Real Author

Today we had a visit from Jane Buxton. Jane has written many pieces for School Journals and lots of  children's picture books too. She read us a couple of her stories one was "The Red Overalls" and the other was "Harry's Hair".
One day we could be an author like Jane.

Just so Cute!!

In the holidays David's little brother Taylor was born. We were lucky to have a visit from him today. He was sound asleep and he was so little. Thank you Jackie for bringing Taylor in for a visit and Congratulations from us all.

Edwards Solar System

Today Edward and his mum brought in a solar system to show us all. Edward has this solar system hanging up in his bedroom. It even has a remote control. So Edward can lie in bed and turn it on, which makes all the planets move continually around the sun.
Wow it was amazing and Ed was able to tell us so much about the planets.
Well done Ed, this was very cool, we were all very impressed.
Thanks also to Jane (Ed's mum) for holding the solar system up for so long!

Olympic Pictures

We have been looking at the different sports in the 2012 London Olympic games. We have been keeping a tally of all the medals, and finding out where the countries are in the world. For dance and movement we have been experimenting with the shapes our bodies can make. We extended this into our art. Each of us decided on a sport from the Olympic Games and drew pictures, thinking carefully of the shape our body makes.

Writing and Posting Letters

We have been writing letters to someone special at home...We wrote our address on the envelopes and then added a stamp. We posted our letters today in our school's letter box. We had to put the flag up so the 'Postie' will know there are some letters to be collected. Now we just have to wait very patiently for our special person to receive our letters....
We are very excited about the journey our letters will take and are wondering how long it will take for them to reach there destination.

10-08-2012
As far as I know all of our letters arrived at the intended destinations. We had a few parents thanking us for sending them. The kids really enjoyed the process of writing and posting these letters. It also meant we had a real life context for our writing that week. Thanks to those parents who received their letters and let us know they had arrived safely. Maybe we might get a letter back.....??

Working Together....

The Triangles maths group worked together today to create an animal park.
Well done you guys! It was a very big animal park. There were no gaps in the fence so the animals won't escape and  I am glad you had the Lions caged up separately!

A Visit From Someone Who Knows...

Hope School had a visit from Phil Jones this week... Phil represented  New Zealand in the Basket Ball  team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics  and again at Athens in 2004.
Room 3 and 4 spent some time asking him some questions about his time at the Olympic  Games...

Did you know that you can eat all the MacDonalds you want if you are a competitor in the Games!
But we are not so sure that would be the best food for an athlete...What do you think?

Phil showed us some of the gear he wore while playing basket ball at the Olympics and a few of us got to try on his shoes and kit. Wow they were size 13 shoes!!  Way too big for Room 3 children!

Measurement

We have been learning how to measure the length and width of things in our classroom by using ordinary objects as our measuring tools. Have a look at some of the things we measured.
David and Theo are working together to measure some large cards.

Cam and Deven are using cubes to measure the iPad.

Edward is measuring one of the long building blocks.

Isabel  measured a pen.

The boys also decided to measure the length of the classroom. They ran out of cubes!

Bella used a shoelace to measure the width of the door.
