Discovery Time Term 3 week 1
At discovery time today we tried out an amazing Makey Makey set. This was very special as it meant we could play music using bananas and mandarins or even playdough! A great lesson in electric currents.
The other activities were: Making a shark picture collage, Making prints with playdough, Magnets, stick puppets and target shoot.
This term our Life Skill is Participating and Contributing and today we were focusing on...how we can use our words to 'join in', or 'approach' a game we would like to be involved in.
More clay fun
Learning about Volume
Welcome back to School... Term 3 is well under way.
This week in Maths we have been learning to find the volume of different sized containers. We were pouring or packing the contents into the other container. That way we know which container holds the most and which one holds the least.
We used water and rice bubbles.

Children's Choice Discovery Time
Today is the last Discovery day of term 2 and as per usual the children chose the activities for Discovery Time.
Lots of problem solving and creativity going on today. I decided it had been a while since I had videoed the children working things out for themselves, hope you enjoy the video.
Happy Holidays see you in two weeks.

Learning to Plait
Barrier Games
In case you don't know what barrier games are.......
They are a great language tool—they provide opportunities to develop receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking) communication skills.
In a barrier game, two players sit across from each other with a barrier, such as a book or a big shield between them. Players take turns at telling the opposite player where to place the objects on their board as they themselves put the same objects, in the same place, on their own board. At the end they both look at the 2 boards and check if they have been able to understand and listen to the correct placement of the objects. Lots of fun.

Life in the past... at home.... and school
Today we joined with Room 4 and took a trip to Bishops School in Nelson and then to Broadgreen House in Stoke.
This trip makes for a great finish to our topic of "Hope School in the Past".
We dressed up in olden-days clothes and stepped back in school time as we entered Bishops School. Our teacher was John..we had to call him Sir (Yes Sir) he carried a cane and made sure we were all behaving ourselves!! We did some reading and writing and had a look around at some of the memorabilia. Bishops School has been around for many years.
Then we left Bishops School and had lunch in the conservatory at Broadgreen House. After lunch we had a great time learning about home life in the early days. We enjoyed making butter, peeling apples, and pumping water from a well. We also learnt how to wash clothes without an automatic washing machine. We discovered that there was no bathroom in the house and that people back then had to use a "chamber pot". It was very interesting looking at all the amazing things in the house.
