Cicada's

We have been listening to the cicadas in the trees this week. We took a walk around the school to see if we could find them. (sorry no photos of our walk as I forgot to take the camera)
Anyway we found one cicada shell attached to a fence and took it back inside with us.  After looking at it and some other pictures of cicadas we wrote some stories about it.

The next morning  Navarah  brought in some more cicada shells for us to look at. She also had one where the cicada had unfortunately died while shedding it's outer shell. So the green cicada was visible for us to see exactly how it would come out of the shell.
Very interesting. Thanks Navarah.

Show and Tell

This week Zoe brought in her duck to show us. The duck sang and moved to the music "singing in the rain" It was very funny. Thanks Zoe for sharing your Mr Duck with us.
After this we learnt the "Tofa Tafa" song which was almost the same as "singing in the rain"

Discovery Time Week 2

Discovery Time is one of the most enjoyable things we do at school. It might look like it is just playing and having fun (which of course it is) but we are also learning many other skills that will help us along our learning journey.
Discovery Time always has a focus on one of our life skills. This term our main focus is 'Managing Self'... so at Discovery Time this week we were learning about making 'good choices' and 'using our manners'.
Our activities were "painting, construction with boxes, making ramps, and goop.

Discovery Time Week one

In Room 3 this year there have been a few subtle changes to our class programme....basically there is a bit more "play time"
Play is an essential part of a child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. For many teachers and parents ‘play’ has attracted a negative ‘time wasting’ connotation but in reality play is a vital part of every child’s development.  It allows them to test ideas, work through uncertainties, explore social interactions  and make sense of the world around them.  Play has no predetermined outcome or time limit.  It is not about an end product but about a process.  It’s the exploration of ideas that is crucial.  Play is children’s work.
It can be argued that children today have fewer opportunities to play and be active than in the past.  There is less time spent exploring the natural world, less time ‘doing their own thing,’ fewer opportunities to take risks and problem solve.  There is more time in supervised, protected and confining activities that put boundaries on learning and creativity.
"Our weekly 'Discovery Time' is one of those opportunities that gives the Room 3 children to do this very important children's work. "
