Our Koru Journey

Because our Koru paintings have been such a big part of our learning this term.... I've put together a slide show of our journey from start to finish...I hope this helps you to understand and celebrate the work these children did to present these art works.
Thank you to all our supporters and encouragers along the way...especially my wonderful parent help who was always there to support the children.

This week for Discovery Time it was wet so we had to have all our activities inside.
So we had: Nail Polish, Building with the wooden blocks, Making pictures with magazines, Play dough, spinning tops and Lego.
Our Focus was still the same as last week...we are trying to think creatively and solve problems by ourselves.

Our Beautiful art work is nearly finished!!

There is only a couple of things left to do on our Koru Paintings. The black outline needs to be put around the Koru's and then the tape dividing each section can come off!!
This has been a real journey of patience, creativity and working together. I am so proud of how the children have worked on this project, for five year olds, they have been so focused and careful at their drawing and painting sessions. They are very proud of what they have created and I hope you will all call into the class and take a look at their work next week. The two paintings will be for sale in the silent auction at our school Country Bazaar next Saturday the 20th of September so maybe you could put in a bid??
Keep watching this Blog to see the absolute final pictures next week.

Milk on the Move!

Another language experience for writing was an experiment we did with milk, food colouring and water.....
Have a look at the photos...Some of us saw koru patterns in the solution, some thought it looked like lava swirling, others used the words twirling and mixing.
You might like to try this at home. Just put a bit of milk in the bottom of a plate, add a few drops of different food colouring then drip a few drops of dish washing liquid in the middle and watch what happens... Lots of discussion about this for us today.

Discovery Time this week included one of the New Zealand icons we have been learning about...Pavlova!
We also had the woodwork table out. We made Fathers Day cards, paper darts, and the ever popular bubble blowing again.
Our focus was "Thinking". So we needed sometimes to stop and think about what we could do to solve a problem or fix something. Have a look at our slide show...

Making a Volcano in the Sandpit.

We have been learning to write Recounts using... When, Where, Who, and What. Then making our stories more interesting by using our five senses...hear, look, feel, taste, and smell. These are a few of our stories from making a volcano in the sandpit.

Today I saw lava coming out the Volcano
Harry

When we went to the sandpit we made a volcano. We put some of the vinegar in the volcano. It burst.
Frances

We made a volcano at school today. Everyone in Room 3. We heard birds squeaking.
Noah

Boom! went the volcano it was today. It had baking soda vinegar food colouring. It was erupting.
Seraphina

Today at school all the kids made a volcano. It looked like blood leaking from our skins. We looked at it. I heard an ambulance.

Daffodils and Dye

Today and yesterday we have been looking at what happens when you put daffodils into dye instead of water. We even looked at them with a magnifying glass and saw up close the small veins of colour appearing on the petals. Very impressive...

Our art work so far....

Our paintings are now ready for some more colour. We have been practising how to hold a brush steady and paint between the lines. We want to do the best job we can on our two paintings that will be for sale at our Country Fair.
